Neurosurgery

Northside Hospital is home to a team of board-certified neurosurgeons, specially trained nurses and pain specialists, who are focused on the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of disorders affecting the nervous system. Equipped with innovative technology including integrated OR suites with image-guided systems, the team is able to perform a variety of minimally invasive procedures for the spinal cord and brain, and remain on the leading edge of patient care. Patients experience faster recoveries, smaller incisions, shorter surgeries and less pain.

At our Atlanta campus, a dedicated inpatient neuroscience unit is designed specifically for patients undergoing neurosurgery and stroke-related procedures. Nurses and staff are specially trained in providing resources, care and overall support for these patients.

Computer-assisted navigation

Northside Hospital was the first hospital in Georgia to acquire the O-arm® Imaging System, which allows surgeons to take real time, 3-D images of the patient during spine surgery to operate more precisely and without having to move the patient.

Cervical artificial disc replacement

With a state-of-the-art surgery center and the expertise of some of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, Northside is a leading hospital for spinal surgery in Georgia, having been among the first hospitals in Atlanta to perform an artificial spine implant. Spinal disc replacement offers patients an alternative to spinal fusion, by replacing the diseased disc with an artificial one and maintaining the patient’s flexibility.

Stereotactic radiosurgery

Nearly two-thirds of all cancer patients receive  radiation therapy at some point during their treatment. The Trilogy™ system from Varian Medical Systems is the most state-of-the-art, powerful and versatile cancer treatment technology available. In addition to delivering conventional forms of radiation therapy, the system can be used stereotactically to treat very small tumors, whether they are in the body or the brain, quickly and with unprecedented precision. Neurosurgeons, specifically credentialed in stereotactic radiosurgery procedures, work alongside board-certified radiation oncologists to use this innovative technology.

Acoustic neuromas

An  acoustic neuroma is a slow-growing, non-cancerous tumor of the nerve that connects the ear to the brain. Northside offers both surgery to remove the tumor, as well as non-surgical stereotactic radiosurgery to slow down or stop the growth of tumors that are hard to remove with surgery.

Stroke Care Program

Each of Northside’s five hospitals is an  Advanced Primary Stroke Care Center of Excellence, providing state-of-the-art care for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke.  Our Stroke Program offers advanced radiological techniques, a dedicated stroke care unit (in Atlanta), and an interdisciplinary stroke team with board-certified neurosurgeons, available 24/7, to help reduce the impact of a stroke and optimize patients’ recoveries.

Spine Center

Our comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach for acute and chronic spinal conditions offers many treatment options. Through Northside's  Spine and Pain Treatment Centers, we treat conditions ranging from minor strains to severe nerve pressure or injury, combining the expertise of many Atlanta spine specialists including neurosurgeons, orthopedic surgeons, fellowship-trained anesthesia pain physicians, neuroradiologists and physical therapists, to provide superlative treatment and follow-up care.

Surgical techniques include:

  • Removal of a  herniated disc using a microscope (microdiscectomy)
  • Removal of bone spurs compressing the spinal cord or nerves
  • Spinal fusions
  • Cervical (neck) disc replacement surgery
  • Removal of nerve and spinal cord tumors
