PAD awareness: A vital health initiative

Peripheral Artery Disease

September is recognized as Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) Awareness Month, dedicated to increasing public knowledge and understanding of this often-overlooked vascular condition.

PAD is a prevalent yet often under-recognized condition, affecting 1 in 20 Americans over age 60 — an estimated 8 to 12 million people in the U.S. This condition, characterized by the narrowing of peripheral arteries, primarily in the legs, can lead to severe complications if left untreated, including an increased risk for heart attack, stroke, amputation and even death.

Patients with PAD may experience pain or numbness in the feet, painful sores or ulcers, or pain in the leg while walking, which subsides when walking stops. Risk factors include smoking, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity, a sedentary lifestyle and being over age 65, though PAD can affect people of all ages.

PAD can progress to its end stage, called critical limb ischemia. It is estimated that about 200,000 Americans each year will face amputation because of advanced PAD. Despite its severity, PAD often remains undiagnosed, partly due to a lack of symptoms in its early stages. As a result, many individuals do not seek medical attention until significant damage has occurred.

The Society for Vascular Surgery (SVS) is at the forefront of efforts to increase PAD awareness, focusing on advancing vascular surgery through research, education and advocacy. One of their key initiatives is the promotion of PAD awareness during September. These programs are designed to educate healthcare professionals and the public about the risks, symptoms and management of PAD.

The PAD awareness campaign highlights the importance of early detection and intervention and emphasizes the role of lifestyle changes in PAD management. Smoking cessation, regular exercise and a healthy diet are critical components of PAD care.
