Family creates nursing scholarship in memory of Northside retiree

Hugh Roberts worked in the Northside Hospital Business Office for 27 years before his retirement in 2017.

In January 2022, after a long illness and declining health, Hugh was admitted to the Northside Hospital Intensive Care Unit (ICU). When a nurse asked Hugh if he knew where he was, he responded with, “I’m home.”

Hugh died on Jan. 14, 2022. His wife Angie remembers the amazing ICU nurses and doctors who worked tirelessly to minister to Hugh and their family during his stay in the hospital.

In recognition of those caregivers and in Hugh’s memory, the Roberts family recently presented the Northside Hospital Foundation with a check for $251,000 to establish the Hugh Roberts Memorial Nursing Scholarship. The scholarship provides financial assistance to students currently enrolled in a nursing program and current Northside nurses who want to advance their skills in critical care.

“It is our hope that … this scholarship will honor the memory of Hugh Roberts, while also helping the lives of countless others who will be touched by the wonderful nursing staff here,” Angie Roberts said.

“It’s comforting to know the money will provide much-needed training resources for nurses who want to enhance their skills in the critical care arena, especially since the pandemic,” Angie added. “Nurses are the key point of contact for patients and families, and are our health care heroes.”

Hugh’s former colleagues in the Business Office said that his compassion for others was evident every day – both in their department and throughout Northside.

The department recently renamed a conference room in Hugh’s honor. Hugh’s family, friends and former colleagues gathered for lunch in the Hugh Roberts Conference Room to share their memories of the man who honored Northside by “paying it forward.”

“[Hugh] was very proud, even though he would never say it to anyone else, that he was there when the Business Office was only a handful of people and got to see it grow to what it is today,” Angie said.
