The vertical expansion of Northside Hospital Forsyth was honored recently as one of the top construction projects at the 2023 Build America Awards.
The Associated General Contractors of America and Construction Risk Partners present the annual awards event as part of the yearly AGC convention.
The AGC, its member companies and the Build America Awards represent excellence in the construction industry. The awards recognize the innovation, design, planning and delivery of projects that result in structures that will be admired for decades to come, according to Joe Charczenko, a partner in Construction Risk Partners.
The Northside Forsyth vertical expansion project was the winner for new building between $20 million and $75 million. Georgia-based Batson-Cook Construction added ninth and 10th floors to the Cumming, Georgia, hospital tower, allowing for 64 new patient rooms across 45,000 square feet.
The project required an aggressive schedule and close coordination during the various project phases.
The project team included the Batson-Cook site team members, the clinical and administrative leadership of the Forsyth Campus, the hospital design and engineering partners ( Howell Rusk Dodson architects and Newcomb & Boyd engineers) and the hospital’s subcontract trade partners
As the two additional floors were constructed at height, the team established an extensive fall protection and falling object prevention program. The team also developed a custom formwork system that supported the placement of more than 6 million pounds of concrete without incident.
The team also built a roof parapet from the framework system, saving an estimated four months and more than $100,000.
“The project was completed on time and budget despite the ongoing COVID pandemic and supply chain challenges that came with it,” Thomas W. Doenitz, system director of facilities operations for Northside Hospital, said.
The lasting, final impression of the vertical expansion was the extraordinary “lantern” light box at the top of the facility, complete with programmable LED lights.
