Construction is underway on a major new medical facility in one of the busiest areas of Gwinnett County.
Officials from Northside Hospital Gwinnett, Physicians Realty Trust and Realty Trust Group broke ground Wednesday, June 28, on Northside Medical Buford. The 100,000-square-foot facility is at 2800 Buford Drive, Lawrenceville, across from The Exchange at Gwinnett and adjacent to Coolray Field, home of the Gwinnett Stripers.
The new medical office building will bring more outpatient imaging, primary care, cardiology, medical oncology, orthopedics and urgent care facilities to the area.
“We are proud of what we’re bringing to the people and the businesses of Gwinnett,” Debbie Bilbro, CEO and president of Northside Hospital Gwinnett and Northside Hospital Duluth said. “Northside Hospital’s growth in Gwinnett County is keeping pace with the area as it grows too … and we are keeping up with the demand of what this county needs.”
Charlie Dickhaus, senior vice president and principal for Realty Trust Group, said the new facility is already 100% leased.
“This site was designed with the patient experience in mind,” he said.
Dickhaus said Northside Medical Buford will bring important services to patients in Gwinnett County who would have previously had to travel further to find the level of care they need and deserve.
Joining Northside for the groundbreaking were Gwinnett County Commissioner Matthew Holtkamp and state Reps. Soo Hong and Derrick McCollum.
Northside Medical Buford is just the latest large-scale investment in serving the health care needs of residents of Gwinnett and surrounding communities.
Work continues on a 15-story patient tower at Northside Hospital Gwinnett, which includes new imaging centers, additional cardiovascular and emergency surgical units, expanded ancillary and support services and more by 2025. A new medical office building recently opened on the Northside Gwinnett campus in Lawrenceville with imaging and surgical centers now open and other tenants expected in the coming months.
Physician offices, an ambulatory surgery center, urgent care and other outpatient services will open soon in two Northside buildings under construction in Phase II of The Grove at Towne Center in Snellville.
Northside Hospital also has five urgent care centers in Gwinnett County, including Health Choice Urgent Care centers that opened in Braselton and Snellville late last year.
System officials said the projects make good on promises from the merger with Gwinnett Medical Center in 2019.
“Promises are being fulfilled in Gwinnett County by Northside Hospital,” said Jay Dennard, chief operating officer of Northside Hospital Duluth.
“It’s hard to believe that it’s almost four years ago that we merged. For those of us that have been here a while, that was a day of celebration, to have the opportunity to join the Northside team — not only selfishly for us as employees but really because as consumers of health care in this market, what Northside is bringing is what the patients and the community of Gwinnett County need and frankly deserve: health care, as you’re seeing here, closer to home, but also a beautiful new patient tower that’s being developed in Lawrenceville at our tertiary campus as we expand not only cardiovascular but orthopedics and oncology services.
“Frankly, no one should have to leave Gwinnett County for care.”
Vertical construction of Northside Medical Buford began in April and the facility is expected to open in the summer of 2024.
