Northside Hospital, once again, has among the very best survival outcomes in the U.S. for bone marrow transplants.
This is according to the Centers for International Blood and Marrow Transplant Research (CIBMTR) in its Final 2023 Transplant Center Survival Report, which tabulated patient survival following transplantation at 178 adult and pediatric transplant centers in the U.S.
For the last 15 consecutive years (2009-23), the Blood and Marrow Transplant (BMT) Program at Northside exceeded predicted one-year survival outcomes for U.S. transplant centers. No other elite transplant program in the nation has achieved this milestone.
About the data: Each year, CIBMTR analyzes survival data for U.S. transplant centers performing allogeneic transplants.
- The reports provide an overall risk-adjusted analysis indicating whether one-year survival is as expected, above expected or below expected for each specific transplant center compared to an average transplant center in the U.S.

Why it matters: Every three or four minutes, someone in the U.S. is diagnosed with a blood cancer like leukemia, according to NMDP (formerly Be The Match). For many patients, their only hope for a cure is a blood or marrow transplant.
By the numbers: In the latest report, patients transplanted at Northside had an 81.9% one-year survival rate, which places the program in the 95th percentile for survival when compared to risk-adjusted predicted outcome (p< 0.5).
- Northside has the largest allogeneic BMT center in Georgia and one of the largest in the Southeast.
- Northside is the only center in Georgia to achieve survival outcomes statistically superior to predicted rates.
- Northside is one of only 12 centers in the U.S. to achieve this status for the current 2023 reporting cycle.
What they’re saying: In a memo to BMT staff, program director, Dr. Kent Holland, said, “This unmatched achievement has been made possible by the incredible dedication of each member of this program.”
- “This is an astonishing achievement for Northside Hospital and Georgia and is an indication that patients receive the very best transplant care here,” added Dr. Asad Bashey, director of clinical research for Northside’s BMT Program.
