Northside Hospital Cancer Institute is expanding lung care with a third Lung Nodule Clinic, now open at Northside Hospital Forsyth in Cumming, Georgia.

The new clinic joins existing locations at Northside Cherokee and Northside Gwinnett. These clinics are dedicated to early diagnosis, coordination and timely care for lung nodules.

What they do: Northside’s Lung Nodule Clinics expedite the workup of patients with suspicious lung nodules, found either incidentally or through the hospital's lung cancer screening program. This early detection aims to improve outcomes for lung cancer patients.

  • Since November 2023, Northside Forsyth’s interventional pulmonology team has been offering robotic bronchoscopy. This minimally invasive procedure is used for biopsying suspicious lung nodules, with the team recently completing its 100th procedure

Why it matters: “When it comes to lung cancer and nodules, timely diagnosis is paramount — not only to start treatment if needed but for peace of mind if cancer is not the diagnosis,” said pulmonologist Dr. Eduardo Egea

“Our goal is to provide our patients with timely access to specialists who can achieve a rapid diagnosis using world-class and safe technology and also accelerate the timeline to appropriate treatment,” added Dr. Simha Jagadeesh, pulmonologist.

Lung cancer is the second most common cancer in both men and women in the U.S., with approximately 234,580 new cases expected in 2024, according to the American Cancer Society. While most lung nodules are benign, they can sometimes indicate early lung cancer and often go undetected without symptoms.

Team effort: Northside’s Lung Nodule Clinics are led by a multidisciplinary team of pulmonologists, radiologists, thoracic surgeons, oncologists and radiation oncologists, who collaborate to provide individualized diagnosis and treatment plans. The nodule clinic nurse navigator works with patients to coordinate their care.

Next steps: Patients with detected suspicious nodules can be referred or self-refer to Northside’s Lung Nodule Clinics for second opinions and more information. Contact 770-292-3120 or LNC.Forsyth@northside.com for more information.
