Northside Hospital Cancer Institute continues its commitment to comprehensive cancer care by offering robust education and support to individuals who have completed cancer treatment. As part of the continuum of care, the Survivorship Program engages patients with valuable information on surveillance, managing potential late or long-term effects and maintaining or improving overall health.
The Radiation Oncology team at Northside has designed the program to address the unique needs of patients who have undergone definitive radiation treatment for cancers such as breast, prostate, cervical and endometrial, with plans to expand to additional cancer types.
“Our program provides these patients with information that addresses the consequences of cancer and treatment, including both medical and psychological late effects,” said Brooke P. Balun, MSN, ANP-BC, AOCNP, lead radiation oncology nurse practitioner. “Our aim is to improve coordination of care and communication between all providers and ensure that our patients understand what to expect in the months to years following their treatment.”
Education begins at the start of treatment, with discussions on the role of radiation therapy and strategies to manage acute effects. Upon completing treatment, patients receive a detailed summary that outlines treatment dates and possible late effects. This resource can be particularly helpful for patients whose next follow-up appointment may be weeks away.
“At the first follow-up visit after completion of radiation therapy, we provide patients with a survivorship care plan that includes information on surveillance, components of a healthy lifestyle, and resources to address ongoing or new concerns,” Balun explained. “These visits also allow patients to voice their fears and define their needs as they transition into the next phase of their lives.”
The program collaborates with many community organizations, such as Cancer Support Community Atlanta, to connect patients with additional resources and opportunities for growth and connection.
“Survivorship is about preparing patients for what lies ahead after a cancer diagnosis,” Balun added. “We aim to empower patients to feel confident when facing future challenges, but also emphasize the importance of enjoying life to the fullest.”
