Lauren’s story: A hospital that makes you feel like family

When Lauren and Brian Shedd planned the birth of their fifth baby, they made the same choice as before: Northside Hospital Cherokee.

“Every single delivery has been a great experience,” Lauren said.

With the birth of No. 5, a girl, in the spring of 2023, a Cesarean section was planned due to placenta accreta, a condition where all or part of the placenta invades the uterine wall.

“From the moment I checked into Labor and Delivery, everything was amazing," Lauren said. “They were compassionate and reassuring that everything would go well. Everyone I encountered the morning of my surgery was awesome.”

Her health conditions made the C-section complicated. The surgery lasted nine hours and required cycling through 30 liters of blood.

“Everyone in that OR (operating room) stepped up and helped take care of me,” Lauren said. “I’m thankful God had everything in place for me at Northside.”

Lauren credited OB-GYN Dr. Angela Falany and four surgeons — Dr. Froylan Gonzalez, Dr. Michelle Glasgow, Dr. Cheney Wilson and Dr. Alyssa Liguori — who “saved my life and made it possible for me to meet my new baby girl.”

Haven Eleanor Shedd was born Thursday, April 6. She weighed 6 pounds, 3 ounces, and measured 19 inches.

Lauren spent a couple of days in the Intensive Care Unit to recover but still had the chance to spend time with her new daughter. Lauren said the nurses and other staff members ensured she got skin-to-skin contact with Haven and got to meet her as soon as she was awake.

“They made sure my baby girl was taken care of and even stepped in to fill the gap so my husband could be with me some,” Lauren said. “When I was moved back to Labor and Delivery, they went above and beyond to help me and my family.”

Lauren recently returned to Northside Cherokee, bringing food to staff members during Patient Care Week in mid-May.

“I could never express my gratitude!” she said.

“They were God-sent. If you are pregnant and looking for a hospital that makes you feel like family, I highly recommend Northside Cherokee.”
