Dr. Megan Tierney, an internal medicine primary care physician at Northside Hospital, discusses the various types of allergies and their management.
While some allergies are diagnosed in childhood, developing new allergies later in life is possible. Emphasizing the importance of safety and prevention, Dr. Tierney advises those with food allergies or allergies to venomous insects to always carry an EpiPen. An EpiPen is a portable, single-use device that automatically injects a measured dose of epinephrine (adrenaline) into the body. Epinephrine is a hormone and neurotransmitter that can quickly reverse the severe symptoms of anaphylaxis. Dr. Tierney highlights the necessity of seeking emergency care after using an EpiPen due to the potential for a second allergic reaction.
