Microsleep periods are very brief lapses into sleep from wakefulness that an individual often does not appreciate when it occurs. These lapses are generally less than 15 seconds and are associated with a behavioral state change. You may have your eyes open and appear awake during a microsleep period, but your brain is not processing external information.
