Explained: Substance abuse and mental illness

Co-occurring disorders are the coexistence of both mental illness and a substance use disorder, also known as dual diagnosis.

Substance use can trigger psychiatric illnesses, such as depression, anxiety, and even psychosis. Common mental health disorders are depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder.

Explained is a series of short videos where Northside experts explain common patient questions.

In this video, Vicki Favors, clinical supervisor of Northside Hospital Behavioral Health Services, discusses substance abuse and mental health.
