Alzheimer's disease is a progressive neurologic disorder that causes the brain to shrink and brain cells to die. It is the most common cause of dementia — a continuous decline in thinking, behavioral and social skills that affect a person's ability to function independently.
In this edition of Northside 101, neurologist Dr. Talal Aboud discusses Alzheimer's disease and the prevention of the disease. There are ways to prevent and decrease the risk of Alzheimer's disease by controlling known risk factors: hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia, cerebrovascular disease, and brain trauma. Almost one-third of Alzheimer's disease cases are attributable to these risk factors. A healthy lifestyle with moderate exercise can decrease the risk of Alzheimer's disease.
Northside 101 is a series of interviews with Northside Hospital's experts, breaking down complex medical terms and procedures.
