One in 15 adults will be diagnosed with some type of depressive disorder.

That's roughly about 7% of the world's population.

Depression is persistent feelings of sadness and hopelessness, with the loss of interest in activities that you once enjoyed. Depression can also present with physical symptoms such as chronic pain or digestive issues. But to be diagnosed with depression, these symptoms have to occur at least two weeks or more in a given year.

Dealing with depression is tough and sometimes you need help. If you ever feel like you or somebody else is in need of help, never hesitate to reach out to a doctor or clinician, or contact Northside's Behavioral Health Services team.

Northside 101 is a series where Northside Hospital experts break down complex medical terms and procedures.
