Northside supports Elachee Nature Science Center

Elachee Nature Science Center in Gainesville is celebrating 45 years as a destination to discover, learn and play in one of north Georgia's great natural areas.

The Elachee Nature Science Center is in the Chicopee Woods Nature Preserve, where the Southern Piedmont transitions to the Blue Ridge Mountains.

“At Elachee Nature Science Center, our mission is to promote environmental understanding through education and conservation,” Maranda Martin, director of school and public programs at Elachee, said. “We do this by getting children outside, by creating bridges between people and nature, and by caring for the Chicopee Woods so that it is accessible to the community now and in the future.”

Elachee provides high-quality, nature-based programs for more than 25,000 school-aged children each year and plays host to more than 1,000 campers each summer during Camp Elachee. Visitors and hikers also enjoy the trails at Elachee.

“Visitors of any age can count on an array of experiences that will help them discover, learn and play in nature including educational exhibits, live animals and a diversity of events and interactive programs year-round,” Martin said.

“Because of the support from Northside Hospital, we are able to keep our programs cost-accessible and can continue to provide quality, low-cost, nature-based experiences to our community and beyond.”

Arts and the environment are one of the main areas of focus for community support from Northside Hospital.
