During the holiday season, our vocal demands can increase with parties, caroling, performances, karaoke, attending concerts, etc. That makes it important to take care of your voice so you can celebrate the holidays and enjoy every moment.
Here are some helpful holiday tips:
- Hydrate your body and vocal cords by carrying a water bottle with you and taking sips throughout the day instead of gulping a bottle every two hours. Try to go light on caffeine, carbonation (sodas and seltzers) and alcoholic beverages, as they can dry out your vocal box/throat.
- Hydrate your voice box by using a humidifier and steamer. Warm showers are great too.
- Practice belly breathing for relaxation by breathing in deep via the nose, allowing the abdomen to expand, and slowly exhale through pursed lips while contracting your abdomen.
- Manage reflux by having dinner 3-4 hours prior to bedtime. Follow mindful mealtimes (try not to overindulge) and be aware of your reflux triggers.
- Take a sip of water, swallow strong and quick, or gently blow like you are flickering a candle instead of coughing to clear your throat; this helps to protect your voice box.
- Complete vocal warm-ups in the morning and before attending your holiday event by humming to your favorite holiday song for 3-5 minutes, focusing on good breath support from abdomen.
- Project your voice by utilizing good breath support and opening your mouth more instead of pushing from your throat and yelling in large, noisy places, such as concerts or large gatherings.
- Take vocal naps as needed to rest your vocal cords.
- Limit voice use to only a few words in the presence of loud background noise to avoid overstraining. Texting can also be helpful in these types of settings.
- Relax and enjoy the holidays with friends and family!
