Each month, Northside Hospital honors special nurses with DAISY Awards. Patients and their families, along with the nurses’ co-workers, have the chance to recognize nurses for care that makes a difference.
Here are recent winners:
Samantha Durand, R.N., Labor and Delivery
Northside Hospital Forsyth
What they said: “Samantha visited me in the recovery room to check on me and my baby. I was so shocked and happy to see her. I certainly felt her care for me as well as my baby. I have never felt such a level of care and passion for their career from any other health care worker. … This is truly her calling and I thank God for having placed such an angel in our path.”
John Gruber, R.N., Intensive Care Unit
Northside Hospital Forsyth
What they said: “He and my mother connected on day one. I remember her pointing at John and drawing a circle in the air, telling me he was an angel and had a halo. She was so right! John listened to my mother and tried to understand her even though she was very weak. … Even though all of my mother’s care in the ICU was excellent, John really stood out. I will always remember him so fondly.”
Elizabeth Johnson, R.N., High-Risk Pregnancy
Northside Hospital Atlanta
What they said: “Liz upheld Northside Hospital’s pledge with unwavering commitment — treating my wife with the utmost courtesy and respect, promptly addressing all her needs and always listening carefully to our questions and concerns. … Liz exemplifies the highest standards of nursing and we are deeply grateful for her extraordinary dedication and compassion.”
Curt ‘Marcus’ Neumann, BSN, R.N., 5 North
Northside Hospital Gwinnett
What they said: “His words were soothing and kind, and almost like I’d known him forever and trusted his advice. My husband and I both felt a peace come over us that all would be OK — and it was! … The morning of my husband’s surgery, even though this nurse wasn’t our assigned nurse, he stuck his head in the door saying he was praying for us. … This nurse is one extraordinary human!”
Misty Reynolds, LPN, 10th Floor
Northside Hospital Cherokee
What they said: “She held my grandmother’s hand and sat with her while the doctor explain what was going on. … We are forever grateful to Misty for recognizing that no one should have to be alone when they are told they only have months to live. She is a wonderful nurse who is able to connect with her patients and their family members like they are old friends and it is clear she truly cares about others.”
Samuel Ryan, R.N., Emergency Department
Northside Hospital Gwinnett
What they said: “To say my nurse was an angel would be a complete understatement. He listed to all of my questions in depth. … To this nurse: I will never be able to thank you enough for your kindness and care. Thank you for having conversations with me to take my mind off things, for reassuring me that things would be OK, and constantly checking up on me.”
Candice ‘CJ’ Underwood, R.N., Emergency Department
Northside Hospital Cherokee
What they said: “At one point as I was being prepared for another brain scan and I began to cry, Candice made a point to stop what she was doing in order to comfort me. It made such a difference as I was alone. … In fact, she didn’t leave until she had the assurance I was given a room and waited until I was being wheeled to that room. I mean, that is what family does for one another — at least really good family.”
Congratulations to these nurses!
