Psych-Oncology Program

Northside Hospital Cancer Institute and Behavioral Health Services offer a Psych-Oncology Program with a multidisciplinary team including Oncology Clinical Social Workers, who work with patients undergoing cancer treatment to reduce emotional distress and improve quality of life. Psych-Oncology is a specialty in cancer care concerned with understanding and treating the social, psychological, emotional, spiritual and functional aspects of cancer, from prevention through bereavement.

People with cancer have much higher rates of depression and anxiety. Patients who suffer from anxiety and depression often have an inferior quality of life, suffer more pain and have a harder time keeping up with their cancer treatment schedule. With appropriate treatment, these patients can have an improved quality of life and are able to manage their treatment. Some studies suggest there are better outcomes in cancer care when depression and anxiety are addressed and treated. Please click here to visit our Oncology Specialty Program.
