Expert Care for Better Sleep

Good sleep is vital to your overall health and quality of life. It affects both your physical health and your emotional well-being. As you sleep, your brain and your body relax and recharge, getting the support they need to work well.

Quality sleep plays a crucial role in learning, concentration, problem-solving and decision-making. But almost one-third of Americans experience a sleep problem at some point in their lives. This increases the risk of both emotional and physical health problems, including heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes and stroke.

The experienced sleep specialists at Northside Hospital blend advanced expertise with the latest technology to evaluate, diagnose and treat even the most complex sleep-related issues. Our board-certified sleep medicine physicians, respiratory therapists and certified sleep technologists provide the highest quality sleep medicine care.

AASM Accreditation for Excellence in Sleep Medicine

All of our Sleep Disorders Center locations at Northside Hospital are accredited by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM), the gold standard for sleep medicine. AASM recognizes our commitment to the highest quality of care in the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders. Earning it requires the latest diagnostic and treatment advances, as well as top quality, patient-centered care.

Sleep disorders that go untreated can cause serious medical conditions. That’s why it’s essential to see a certified sleep specialist, specifically trained in sleep disorders and following regulated quality standards.

There are more than 80 sleep-related disorders that could impact your overall health. By seeing a sleep specialist with the experience, diagnostic tools and clinical expertise necessary, our team at Northside Hospital can provide an accurate diagnosis for your specific condition and find the right treatment for you.

Expertise in Common and Complex Sleep Disorders

Our Sleep Disorders Centers are equipped to evaluate and treat sleep disorders of all types. Some of the most common include:

Excessive sleepiness / excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS)
Not a disorder, but EDS is a symptom of many other conditions. A qualified sleep medicine physician can help you find the exact cause and treat it, which is important to the safety and quality of life for you and your loved ones.
Narcolepsy
Excessive daytime sleepiness is the main symptom of narcolepsy, a relatively rare chronic disease that affects your central nervous system. Some people with narcolepsy also have sudden bouts of temporary muscle weakness.
Snoring
Common for many adults, snoring can make it hard to sleep. It may also be a sign of more serious conditions such as heart problems or sleep apnea.
Insomnia
Trouble falling asleep or staying asleep at night can be a short-term condition. Other times insomnia can last longer, caused by stress or physical illness. Treatment can help prevent emotional disorders like depression, and physical issues, including heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes or stroke.
Restless leg syndrome (RLS)
With leg pain or discomfort that feels worse at night, RLS can cause short-term or long-term insomnia.
Sleep apnea
There are two types of sleep apnea — obstructive sleep apnea and central sleep apnea. In both kinds, your breathing repeatedly stops and starts during sleep. Sleep apnea can lead to problems such as daytime tiredness, high blood pressure and heart disease.
Sleepwalking
A common condition among children, sleepwalking can be hereditary. As the name implies, people who sleepwalk may walk around, do other activities and look awake even though they are still asleep. Although not usually harmful by itself, sleepwalkers may risk getting injured during their sleepwalking activities.

Understanding Your Sleep Habits

If you’re struggling to feel rested, take our Epworth Test or Questionnaire to determine if you are at risk for a sleep disorder.
