Northside Hospital Visitation Guidelines

Updated 5/22/2023

Northside Hospital has established visitation guidelines that consider patient, public health and staff safety, as well as the emotional and care needs of patients and their families who are separated while facing illness or life events. Northside reserves the right to reduce visitation access at any time based on public health and safety concerns.

Visitor Policy

  • All visitors must be age 16 or older. There will be no first time admittance after 8 pm.
  • One visitor will be allowed for Emergency Department patients. The visitor may change during the duration of the visit.
  • Labor & Delivery, Mother-Baby and High Risk Perinatal patients are allowed three support people (includes doulas) of the mother's choosing for the duration of the hospital stay.
  • Special Care Nurseries will permit two caregivers to visit their infant in the NICU.
  • Patients undergoing outpatient surgery or procedures are allowed two visitors in the waiting room.
  • One care partner will be allowed for Northside Hospital Cancer Institute office visits (consults, exams). Infusion center visitors will be allowed only on exception.
  • Exceptions may be made for patients receiving end-of-life care, rapid decline in condition, emergency care, behavioral health concerns or other unique patient conditions.

Visitor Screening Guidelines and Requirements

Northside recommends that visitors wear face masks in our facilities, even if you’ve been vaccinated against COVID-19. Masks are available at hospital entrances and nursing stations.

COVID-19 spread prevention:
  • If you are displaying any symptoms of COVID-19, do not visit patients.
  • If you have tested positive for COVID-19 or have been exposed to someone who tested positive, Northside recommends you wait at least 10 days before visiting a patient.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • Wash your hands often with soap and warm water for 20 seconds, especially after touching tissues with secretions after coughing or sneezing.
Visitors of patients with COVID-19 must report to the unit nursing station before entering the patient room for information on additional protection measures.

Infection control and prevention measures are always a priority at Northside Hospital. Our Infection Control specialists and clinical leadership have a coordinated and comprehensive plan to handle infectious disease patients, adhering to the CDC’s recommendations and guidelines for prevention, surveillance and treatment.
