Visiting Hours & Policies

Northside Hospital Visitation Guidelines

Northside Hospital has established visitation guidelines that consider patient, public health and staff safety, as well as the emotional and care needs of patients and their families who are separated while facing illness or life events. Northside reserves the right to reduce visitation access at any time based on public health and safety concerns.

Visitor Policy

  • Generally, family and support individuals are allowed to visit anytime during applicable visiting hours. However, some patient care areas may have additional restrictions based on the patient population. Please check with the nursing staff for applicable visiting hours and restrictions on the number of visitors that may apply.
    • Emergency Department patients: limited to one visitor (who may change during the visit)
    • Labor & Delivery, Mother-Baby and High-Risk Perinatal patients: allowed three support people (including doulas) of the mother's choosing at any given time
    • Special Care Nursery patients: two caregivers are allowed to visit their infant in the NICU
    • Patients undergoing an outpatient surgery or procedure: two visitors are allowed in the waiting room
    • Northside Hospital Cancer Institute office visits (consults, exams, etc.): one care partner allowed
    • Infusion Center: visitors allowed only on an exception basis
  • Some areas within Northside’s facilities may prohibit children from visiting or limit the age of children who are allowed to visit. Please check with the nursing staff.
  • All children who are allowed to visit, including those remaining in the lobby or waiting areas, are to be accompanied by and continuously supervised by an adult (who is not the patient or a member of the patient’s healthcare team).
  • An overnight visitor may be allowed in Labor & Delivery, Mother-Baby or High-Risk Perinatal at the discretion of the nurse. Children are not allowed to stay overnight.
  • Exceptions to these guidelines (including visitation by children) or department-specific visitation guidelines may be made for patients receiving end-of-life care, patients experiencing a rapid decline in condition or behavioral health concerns, patients receiving emergency care, or patients with other unique conditions.

Visitor Screening Guidelines and Requirements

Northside offers face masks to visitors in our facilities. Masks are available at hospital entrances and nursing stations. At some hospital locations, visitors may be required to check in and obtain a visitor badge. Please bring a form of government ID.

Prevention of Viral Respiratory Illness (including COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2)

  • If you are displaying any symptoms of COVID-19 SARS-CoV-2 or respiratory illness, do not visit patients.
  • If you have a positive viral test for COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2 or have been exposed to someone who tested positive, Northside recommends you wait at least 10 days before visiting a patient.
  • Cover your mouth and nose with a tissue when you cough or sneeze.
  • Perform hand hygiene with soap and water or alcohol-based hand rub, especially after touching tissues with secretions after coughing or sneezing.

Visitors of patients with COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2 must report to the unit nursing station before entering the patient’s room for information on additional protection measures.

Infection control and prevention measures are always a priority at Northside Hospital. Our Infection Control specialists and clinical leadership have a coordinated and comprehensive plan to handle infectious disease patients, adhering to the CDC’s recommendations and guidelines for prevention, surveillance and treatment.
