Northside Hospital Cancer Institute’s Gynecologic Cancer Program leads the way in groundbreaking surgical procedures for better outcomes and less invasive treatments of all types of gynecologic cancers.

The specific type of cancer a woman has and how advanced it is will determine her available treatment options. For the majority of cancer patients, surgery is an integral component to their treatment plan. Patients at Northside can rest assured that they are receiving high-quality surgical services from some of the region’s most experienced surgeons. Minimally invasive robot-assisted and laparoscopic surgeries, as well as traditional open surgical procedures are all available to treat a wide array of GYN conditions. In fact, Northside is the Southeast’s leader for total robotic procedures performed, including those for gynecologic cancers.

Northside’s four women’s-only surgery suites for breast and gynecologic surgery feature the most advanced technology available and staff that is dedicated specifically to helping patients facing these types of surgeries. Our inpatient cancer unit also is designed specifically for patients diagnosed with gynecologic cancers. Nurses and unit staff are specially trained in GYN cancer treatment and symptom management to provide resources, care and overall support.

Hysterectomy

Hysterectomy is the second most common surgery after cesarean section. It can cure a variety of problems to which the uterus is prone. Most often hysterectomy is recommended for serious cases of fibroids, benign tumors that grow in the wall of the uterus. It also is used to cure cervical cancer, endometrial or uterine cancer and severe cases of endometriosis, amongst others. In addition to traditional laparoscopic hysterectomy, surgeons at Northside perform hysterectomy robotically and via single-incision. Northside was the first hospital in Georgia to perform a radical hysterectomy using robotic technology.

HIPEC

Northside was the first hospital in Atlanta to offer Hyperthermic Intraperitoneal Chemoperfusion, or HIPEC, to treat ovarian cancer. Performed during surgery, HIPEC delivers heated chemotherapy into the abdominal cavity, which allows a much higher dose of chemo to permeate the diseased tissue than could be accomplished conventionally.

Robotic Surgery

Northside ranks in the top 5% of all robotic GYN programs in the nation. By using robotic technology, Northside surgeons are allowed a greater range of motion than humanly possible and the ability to perform more precise, less invasive procedures. As a result, our patients experience reduced post-operative pain and shorter recovery times. Read more about our robotic surgery program.
