Cancer Support & Mentoring

Network of Hope (NoH) was started in January 1998, when a small group of cancer survivors, just like you, held an informal meeting to share issues and concerns related to their own diagnosis. Since then, our program has continued to grow.

The mission of Network of Hope is to provide our Northside community, impacted by cancer, with patient support, in-hospital visits, mentoring, outreach opportunities and special events. With a focus on hope, we empower survivors to become cancer and wellness advocates.

Network of Hope is a part of both Northside Hospital Cancer Institute’s Oncology Support Services and Volunteer Services at our five Northside Hospital campuses in Atlanta, Cherokee, Duluth, Forsyth and Gwinnett.
We embrace the idea that patients and their caregivers need support when facing cancer.

The goals of Network of Hope include the following:

1. Provide supportive mentorship through the matching of cancer survivor volunteers with patients and/or caregivers.
2. Offer hope and wisdom from someone who has been through cancer and embraced life afterwards.
3. Offer our volunteers the opportunity to become cancer advocates at Northside Hospital and in the community.

About Our Volunteers

There are certain qualities that we look for in our Network of Hope volunteers to ensure that they are able to effectively help and communicate with the communities, patients, and caregivers that they may be interacting with on behalf of the organization. These include:

• A strong desire to give back.

Volunteer Opportunities: Survivors Who Have Just Completed Treatment

For volunteers who have just completed their cancer treatment, Network of Hope offers three ways for you to help. Sometimes, available opportunities may be dependent on the current needs of the organization.

• Community Outreach – Members of the Community Outreach Team assist in the preparation, distribution and discussion of educational materials at community functions and screening events. Members also have the opportunity with our Speakers Bureau to share their cancer stories as requests for speakers at various events become available.
• Special Events – As a part of the Special Events Team, volunteers assist with set-up, breakdown and other additional support that may be needed during event days.
• Behind the Scenes –In order for us to offer our services to cancer survivors, patients and caregivers, we rely on our caring volunteers that are able to provide administrative support to our staff.

Volunteer Opportunities: Survivors Who Are One-Year Post-Treatment

After you have had a chance to make a healthy adjustment to life after cancer, you may be eligible to join our Patient and Caregiver Support Team. Members of this team provide support to survivors and their caregivers through phone conversations, hospital visits, or volunteer opportunities at NHCI infusion centers.

How to Get Started

1. Complete a Network of Hope application for the Northside Hospital campus Volunteer Services that is most convenient for you:

2. Once your application is reviewed, you will interview with the Northside Hospital Volunteer Services manager. This interview will help you determine what positions would be the best fit for you. Please note: A background check is required.
3. Complete a phone interview with the Network of Hope coordinator.
4. Once you have been approved as a Network of Hope volunteer, you will be asked to participate in Volunteer Services and Network of Hope volunteer training sessions.
