What Is Endometrial / Uterine Cancer?

Endometrial cancer (also referred to as uterine cancer) is a type of gynecologic cancer that starts in the endometrium, the lining of the uterus (womb).

Symptoms of Endometrial Cancer

There are a few symptoms that may point to endometrial cancer, but some are more common as this type of cancer becomes more advanced.

Symptoms of endometrial cancer include:

  • Abnormal vaginal bleeding, spotting or other discharge.
  • Lower abdominal pain or pelvic cramping.
  • Thin white or clear vaginal discharge after menopause.
  • Unintended weight loss.

Prevention

There are no screening tests or exams to find endometrial cancer early. Women should have annual well-woman doctor visits, including regular pelvic exams. It is important that women with an increased risk for developing endometrial cancer see their doctor whenever they have any abnormal vaginal bleeding. A primary care provider or gynecologist can recommend the right cancer screenings and diagnostic tests based on age, lifestyle and family history.

There is no guaranteed prevention against endometrial cancer, but maintaining a healthy weight through diet and exercise and avoiding smoking and other tobacco products can reduce the risk of cancer.

As part of our comprehensive approach to cancer prevention and education, Northside offers Built To Quit, a smoking and tobacco cessation program offering resources to help individuals quit smoking and stop using other tobacco products. For additional information please call 404-780-7653 or email smokingcessation@northside.com or click on the button below to register online for an upcoming class.
